Heart of Amber

THE HEART OF AMBER

Set in the late 1980s, The Heart of Amber is a story of love and rebellion, of feminine courage and hope. Nabila, a social psychologist—bold, intelligent and amiably charming—loses her father to medical nemesis. Though deeply grieved, she is surprised to find herself in love with an Iranian surgeon, whose whole clan was tortured out of existence by Khomeini's theocratic regime. When they feel that they cannot live without each other they decide to get married. Unfortunately, it turns out that it is going to be an interfaith marriage, and both the community and the clergy turn hostile. But nothing daunts Nabila. She fights her way through a hell of opposition, caring little of its malicious might. She is harassed, threatened and rendered infamous, yet she does not give in. In spite of the persecuting mania of the herd, the wedding date is fixed. But would it be possible for the bridegroom to arrive? Or does he give in to the hostile forces only to leave the bride wretchedly alone? The climax is breathtakingly thrilling, yet too inspiring, too beatifying.

TESTIMONIALS

It is a beautiful love story about courageous women fighting and finding ways for their individuality, equality and love. It is written in an amazing way. It also highlights the ever burning issues of interfaith marriages. It is serious yet humorous novel. Despite the fact that it is a story of late 1980s, the social issues outlined have the same presence in the era (considered to be much more civilized) we live in today and messages from the book can be applied to overcome these issues. Out of the three women, Nabila is very daring, intelligent and logical proving love is the only rational justification of human existence on this planet. She takes incredibly strong steps for just what is right without caring what people will say and do (even harmful act). Finally what matters is love and humanity.

Apart from the story what we can also be impressed of is the vast and diverse knowledge of the author. I do not have words to express the level of his intellect. Pick a subject and he looks to be master of it, be it a language and looks he has great hold of many languages or Philosophy or Psychology or Cosmology and many more.

I strongly encourage and request the author to bless the society with many more such books.

This novel is marvelous for many reasons. First of all it is a romantic story set in 1980s beautifully. Secondly Qamar Takhyan has touched many dark sided issues which persists in India as well as in the entire world. Nabila who teaches her own mind as a psychology professor meets a critic response from her dean. Soon she falls in love with an Iranian surgeon Seharzad. Seharzad who emigrated from Iran and settled in India, whose all the members of his family killed in the Khomeini's dictatorial regime. Seharzad speaks persian language in such a manner that it gives a delight to the reader. However misfortune doesn't give up and he soon falls in the Indian society trap. Lovers are separated.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever. This was said by John Keats. In this way a thing of good literature stays forever. This the case with The Heart of Amber. On one of my friends advice I bought this novel and what I have seen is a high literary writing in the form of this novel.
Nabila and Seharzad have left a stump never ending beauty.

BIO

Qamar Takhyan ( ne’ Qamar ulHuda): The author  of  The Heart of Amber is also best known for his Urdu novel Gul e Sehra, which champions the cause of feminine intellectual freedom and its plight. Born to a very poor family, with a large number of siblings—six brothers and two sisters—he had to struggle very hard, after leaving school, for bare subsistence. With ailing father and distressed mother, and the two quite irresponsible older brothers, he found himself forced to quit his formal education after the secondary school, much to his chagrin. Endurance of suffering and privation became his lot. He suffered both physically and emotionally, sometimes solemnly considering suicide. What kept him from this decision was love for knowledge and his family, for whom he was the only hope. No matter how hard his life has been he pursued a vision – a vision of truth, of beauty, love and liberty – which is displayed in his writings.

He was born on 18 May, 1950 in a small village of Dhanbad, India. Poorly educated as he was, he taught himself languages, and making the world and life his university, he roamed freely on the lands of learning. To understand the universe and life has been, perhaps, the strongest impulse in him, which led him to philosophy and to agnosticism.

He finds himself alone, utterly alone, in his loves and aversions, in his ideals and ethical values. In the early nineties he edited an Urdu journal, published his Urdu novel Gul-e-Sehra, advocating independence of feminine individuality, which is by no means less important than that of men’s. He hates dogmas of all kinds, whether that of religion or that of science. To him, any division of mankind on the basis of race, religion, and nation is not only unscientific and irrational, but also harmful to life itself. He believes in one universe, one nature, one human race.
